An excellent refrerence material - This book serves as an excellent reference material for DOS users in addition to being a very good and comprehensive introduction to DOS for beginners. I found this book invaluable when I was trying to recollect arcane DOS terms and usages for instant use. This ranks as one of the best books on DOS that I have come across.
An excellent book for anyone who needs to learn MS-DOS! - I spend much of my time developing in 32-bit languages such as MS Visual Basic, and so it was a pleasing change to find a book written for older systems. The command reference holds just about any command you could possibly need to use, and well written sections cover topics such as disk drives and file management, to writing boot menus and batch files. The only thing that I could complain about, is that the quality of the paper wasn t particularly good. Other than that though, I found it fascinating to read about how people thought computers would develop in 1993!! What ever happened to the revolutionary 2.88Mb floppy for instance? They seemed so certain that it would take off...Overall though, this is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in MS-DOS, and in how computers used to be.
If you need to learn DOS this is the one. - If, for some reason, you need to learn an older version of DOS, this is an excellent book by itself or in conjunction with a course. There is a small exercise book that is available and it complements the book. Each chapter is written in an easy to follow manner and if you have the exercise book, you can test yourself too. DOS by itself doesn t hold the same importance as it once did, but its an important starting point if you seriously want to begin a career in IT.
